Davis vandalism investigated as hate crimes

DAVIS, CA - It's a symbol of hatred many are used to seeing in museums, but not on the streets of 21st century Davis.

The letters "KKK" were scratched into the hood of a pick-up truck Thursday afternoon and quickly launched a hate crime investigation.

"It is rude and hateful and destructive, and we just cannot understand why someone would do it," Arlene Dendulk said of the markings on her car.

Dendulk said the damage is so disturbing she has trouble describing it.

"There's what appears to be a swear word scratched into the front windshield, and then an ethnic people group's name scratched into the hood," Dendulk said.

However, the vandalism was not isolated. Dendulk's neighbor Scott Adler came home from vacation to find words scratched all over his car also.

"It doesn't make you feel warm and fuzzy about living in Davis when things like this happen," Adler said.

Vandals hit all three vehicles parked outside the owners' homes on Antioch Drive. Police are investigating each case as the victims deal with the aftermath.

Investigators believe the vandalism happened over the last few days beginning as early as late Friday night or early Saturday morning.
