Paper Clip Challenge - Going For The Goal | Community Spirit
Title (Max 100 Characters)
With the closing ceremonies for the Olympics arriving soon, I am still in the process of spreading the word for my Paper Clip Challenge event in Davis for August 20th-21st. Just a little more work needs to be done before I will be completely able to undertake this difficult endeavor. Before I do so, I want to stress the importance of this event to me and my community.
When I was first accepted to the University of California, Davis, the state budget deficits had already been going on for several years. By 2008, my final year of high school, the budget looked so bad that I was worried that even if I get accepted into college for the following year, I might not have enough financial resources to be able to attend college. Fortunately, what remained of the finances allocated for education provided me with a small enough portion to help fund my education. I was granted a Pell Grant in addition to a few other university scholarships that pay for nearly the entire cost of my annual tuition fees. If I had not received even a portion of any of the scholarships I earned, I don't think even college employment would have helped to make up the deficit, since many of my peers have told me that finding employment that they qualify for is difficult, especially when they could devote that time for studying instead of working.
As for me, I worry that the next generation of college students will have a poor quality educational experience. This is worrisome because this will also have a dimishing impact on the quality of life for society. Not to mention the college students who follow afterwards. However, not being content with this, I want to make a difference. Even if it is just in my immediate community of Davis. But, we could still use a few volunteers to help with the event.
As the Olympics begin to wind down, and the school year approaches, I am still currently in the midst of getting all the necessary items and people organized for the Paper Clip Challenge. We are still in need of as many volunteers who are able to donate a few hours towards helping with the event. If you or someone you know would like to help contribute some volunteer hours or make a financial donation towards the schools in Davis, please read my blog at http://paperclipchallenge.wordpress.com/2012/03/04/paperclip-challenge-2012/ in order how to find out how you can help. Thank you, and have a nice weekend.
